Nollaig Shona! Happy Christmas to everyone! The Christmas season is always a very special and enjoyable time in St. Joseph’s. We have Nativity Plays, Carols, Cake Sale, Christmas Shoebox appeal, visit of Santa Claus, etc. A special word of thanks to the Garda Band who visited us yesterday. We even had some Christmas Gardening this year as Ms. Maher’s class planted amaryllis bulbs in October to flower at this time. Well done to our 5th and 6th class boys who were awarded merit certificates for their entries into the Book of Kells Creative Writing Awards in Trinity College Dublin recently. A special congratulations goes to Conor who came 1st in the Primary School Section which had competition entrants from all over the world.
Our thanks to Terenure College for a great event last Friday. It was a chilly morning and conditions were testing after all the recent rainfall. The 94 boys from Joeys ran their socks off, especially Ms. Byrne’s class, and we had three 2nd place finishers. Well done everyone! Click here for photos.
We hope you all had a great Halloween break, didn’t get too scared and had great family time through out the week. We have taken down the Halloween decorations, the posters for our Maths challenges and trails from our Maths week and you’d never guess that very messy experiments had taken place for Science week just before our break. Thanks to our cleaning staff during the break and to the boys who know it is important to clean up our work spaces so we can be comfortable and healthy in school. A wet morning greeted us today but the boys and teachers are happy to be back catching up with their school buddies. We are looking forward to a great school term of hard work and good fun!
Here’s a taste of Maths week, Science week and Costumes worn by our junior end of the school.
Next week, Oct 14th to 18th, we have the Scholastic bookfair visiting the school hall. You can check the books available by clicking here. Many of the books are in the Accelerated Reading book system which all classes from 1st to 6th follow. Boys may visit with their parents from 0830 to 0850 every morning. Classes will also be timetabled to visit the fair with their teachers during the week. Boys should consult the catalogue in advance and bring no more than €10 to school. Our thanks to Bean Uí Loinsigh who has organised this and to Pauleen McTague whose help has been indispensable.
Maths ‘Week’ takes place this year October 12 – 20. This is a time for pupils to explore the Maths environment, both at school and at home. There will be lots of fun activities going on in school throughout the week. On Mangahigh boys can compete with other ¨mathletes¨ from around the world with the scoring going live from 7am on Saturday 12th! Any Maths homework given will focus on solving problems, as well as developing an awareness of Maths all around us … Shapes, Money, Measures, Ratio, Symmetry etc. We hope every child will benefit from Maths Week 2019. Sample puzzle-If each girl in a family has an equal number of brothers and sisters but all the boys have three times more sisters than brothers, how many boys are in the family?
Yesterday in the beautiful Santry Demense park we had our first run of the year in the Clonliffe Harriers schools cross country. 45 boys from 4th, 5th and 6th classes represented St. Joseph’s and all ran very well especially the boys from Mr. O’Flynn’s class. The 5th class boys were 3rd in the team event with Ben finishing 5th and Cillian, Eoghan and Sean all finishing in the top 25 against around 200 boys from 20 other schools, including some from as far away as Armagh and Belfast! There will be several more of these cross country runs during the school year and every boy from 3rd to 6th will get an opportunity to run so get out running and get fit! Photos here.
Our Cumann na mBunscol school football season is well under way and the four school teams will be in regular action up to Halloween. We are also continuing a long tradition in St. Joseph´s by running a 3rd and 4th class football league in the first term. Our thanks to the teachers who give their time and energy coaching and supervising after school. Senior team photos. Junior team photos.
