Physical Education Programme

The PE programme in St. Joseph’s B.N.S. incorporates six strands – Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Aquatics and Outdoor and Adventure Activities. In accordance with our PE plan, all classes receive 1 hour of physical education each week. Teachers use the primary school PE curriculum as well as the PSSI lesson plans to plan their lessons. We follow a standardised PE timetable.

All classes are taught at least 5 of the 6 different PE strands each year: Athletics, Aquatics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Outdoor and Adventure Activities. We allocate a balanced amount of teaching time to the different strands. For the 2020/2021 school year, we have all worked together to focus on the Dance Strand in particular.

In St Joseph’s BNS, each class receives at least 60 minutes of timetabled physical education per week. By taking part in the Active School Flag programme, it is helping us to focus on an improved provision of Physical Education in the school. We ensure that as per our Whole School PE Plan, all of our PE activities are planned so that they are accessible by all pupils. In this way, we always encourage our parents to liaise with us if their child has any issue that we need to be aware of when teaching our PE lessons. We will also give feedback to parents on their child’s progress in PE in PT meetings and in their annual school report.

This year we prioritised the PE strand Dance: we agreed as a whole school that the dance strand would be the one we would focus on the most.  We would try to incorporate it into our PE lessons and other curricular areas such as Gaeilge, Drama, Bizzy Breaks, etc.

Swimming lessons take place during Terms 1, 2 and 3 in Templeogue College Swimming Pool.  Children from 4th, 5th and 6th class level get the opportunity to partake in a block of lessons (8 weeks). The lessons are on Thursdays. Each week the children get to learn and develop new swimming strokes and techniques. The children really enjoy it!

In our first and second terms of the year our football and hurling coaches work with our pupils in 1st to 3rd class. Junior and senior classes also engage in games during these terms focusing on basic skills required for playing games.

Our PE Equipment:

We carry out regular audits of our PE Equipment where we dispose of old or broken equipment. Our equipment and resources are clearly labelled, well organised and easily accessible in our PE store.
