St. Joseph’s celebrated the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising today with the official flag raising ceremony. It was a great occasion, attended by all the boys in the school from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. The ceremony was made particularly special by the attendance of Ms. Una Fletcher. Una’s father, Blimey, was one or the volunteers in the GPO in Easter 1916. She raised the flag for St. Joseph’s and gave a presentation in our school hall to a selection of classes followed by a question and answer session.
Eoghan and Jason from 6th class read out the proclamation from 1916 and Cian and Cillian from 5th class read out a their proclamation with a vision for a modern Ireland. Ms McCabe welcomed all the boys and spoke about the significance of this day in the history of our school. The 1916 commemoration ceremonies were co-ordinated by Mr. Concannon.
Sgt. Karen Walshe, Commandant Will Cummins and Flight Sgt. William Barr came to St. Joseph’s today to present the school with a copy of the 1916 Proclamation and the Irish National Flag.
The visitors were welcomed and presented by Ms. McCabe and Commandant Cummins and Conor Q. in 5th Class jointly read the Proclamation. The flag was then presented to the school represented by Daniel and James T. Christopher K. showed a medal that was presented to his great grandfather who was shot during the 1916 Rising.
If you have any memorabilia from the 1916 Rising or if some of your relatives took part we would be delighted if you would let us know about it in the school as we intend to have the 1916 commemoration ceremony in March 2016.
